Ajax IN ACTION

In this beautiful summer weekend, I read "Ajax IN ACTION" by Dave Crane and Eric Pascarello with Darren James. This book is really good. I was a web developer a few years ago and have been working on Web Services solely in recent years. I have noticed that many web sites can dynamically change their page contents without refreshing the whole page, like Google Maps and JohnlScott. In fact, Asynchronous JavaScript + XML(Ajax) is in action, which has greatly enhanced user experience.

Ajax IN ACTION is a great book about this subject. It includes:

  1. Ajax principles
  2. Why Ajax design pattens matter
  3. How to avoid Ajax pitfalls
  4. Examples of  Ajax in action: type-ahead sugges, live searching using xsl and many more
  5. Examples using Ajax frameworks: Prototype, Scriptacuous, x and Rico
  6. Ajax usability, security, and performance

A few key points about Ajax application:

  1. The browser hosts an application, not content.
  2. The server delivers data, not content.
  3. The user interacts continuously with the application, and most requests to server are implicit rather than explicit.
  4. Our codebase is large, complex, and well structured. It is a first-class citizen in our architecture, and we must take good care of it.
